Aut dosce, aut disce, aut discede

An opinionated proselyte of palavers a many such as feminism, Islam, world politics in general, South Asian affairs in specific, military strategy, peace studies, philosophy and literature. Raised in Virginia, USA. Ruminating in Lahore now.

Rumored to be unforgivably laconic and absinthal for a raconteur. Simply put: This personal blogmanac is dedicated to my bromidic endeavors hither and tither.

Views expressed are my own. Reblogs are not necessarily endorsements of the idea/product.

“I also thank Angelina for dressing in hijab while she visited not just Iraqi refugees but refugees in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Not only did she look good in it, she showed respect and appreciation for their culture and religion and made sure that the focus was not on her looks but rather her mission.”

I don’t mean to display my approval of this as policing clothes for people from other cultures and faiths.
I just really love this. As a woman of Muslim Gujjar, Mughal and Afghan heritage (among others), I find it very endearing and respectful of people to adjust themselves according to said customs of the culture I hail from. It means a lot. We aren’t necessarily offended if you don’t cover your head or choose to wrap a chador around but when someone does that to show respect, they instantly become a favorite among us.
It has nothing to do with religion or oppression (both terms not interchangeable). It’s basically showing deferential respect for someone’s roots.
